Mimic is a web platform for the artistic exploration of musical machine learning and machine listening. It was designed to be a collaborative platform as an interactive online coding environment, engineered to bring new technologies in AI and signal processing to artists, composers, musicians and performers all over the world. The project is a collaboration between UAL Creative Computing Institute, Goldsmiths, the University of Durham, the University of Sussex, and Google Magenta and has been funded by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
We were commissioned to design an identity and website for this 3 year long research project. The logotype is based on a basic concept of Machine Learning – learning by modelling a given dataset. Here the second set of letters, M and I, is mimicking the first in a playful way. With its bold shapes and colour, the project was given an accessible and friendly look to attract a wider audience of laypersons to the rather complex concept of Machine Learning.
